You cancel ChatGPT Plus on the web at chatgpt.com: click your profile icon, open Settings > Subscription > Manage my subscription > Cancel plan, and confirm. Your paid features stay active until the end of the current billing period, then your account drops to the free tier. If you subscribed inside the iPhone or Android app, you cancel through Apple or Google instead, not on the website.
ChatGPT is one of the easier subscriptions to leave. No retention screens, no lock-in, no early-termination fee. The harder question is which tier you actually need, because OpenAI now sells four consumer plans from $0 to $200 a month.
How to cancel on the web
- Go to chatgpt.com and sign in.
- Click your profile icon (bottom left) > Settings.
- Open Subscription.
- Click Manage my subscription.
- Click Cancel plan.
- Confirm.
Cancel at least 24 hours before your renewal date. OpenAI bills the next cycle the moment it renews, and a cancellation after that point ends future billing but does not reverse the charge you just paid.
You stay on Plus until the paid period you already bought runs out. If you cancel on 3 July and your cycle ends on 20 July, you keep every Plus feature until 20 July.
Cancel from iPhone or Android
Where you subscribed decides where you cancel. If you tapped "subscribe" inside the ChatGPT app on a phone, Apple or Google took the payment, and only Apple or Google can stop it. The ChatGPT website will not show a cancel button for an App Store or Google Play subscription.
- iPhone (App Store billing): Open Settings on the phone > tap your name > Subscriptions > ChatGPT > Cancel Subscription. You can also reach it from the ChatGPT app by tapping your profile > Subscription > Manage Subscription, which redirects into Apple's subscription screen.
- Android (Google Play billing): Open the Google Play app > tap your profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > ChatGPT > Cancel subscription.
Apple and Google add a markup, so an App Store subscription can cost more than the same plan bought on the web. If you cancelled through Apple and re-subscribe later, do it at chatgpt.com to pay OpenAI's direct price rather than the in-app rate.
The four consumer plans, and what each costs
ChatGPT is billed in US dollars for Australian users. Your bank applies its own exchange rate, so the AUD figure shifts a little each month.

Plus has held at US$20 a month since February 2023, monthly only, with no annual discount. Go launched in January 2026 as a cheaper middle tier at US$8, sitting above Free but without Deep Research, Sora, custom GPTs or agent mode. Pro at US$200 is aimed at heavy daily users who hit Plus limits.
OpenAI also sells Business (around US$25 per user a month, US$20 a seat on annual billing) for teams that want a shared workspace and admin controls, plus Enterprise on custom pricing. Those are billed per seat, so a team admin cancels seats rather than a personal plan.
Downgrade instead of cancelling
If ChatGPT is worth something to you but $33 a month is not, downgrade rather than cancel outright. Two moves are cheaper than leaving:
- Drop from Plus to Go. You keep a paid-tier message allowance at roughly a third of the price. You lose Deep Research and agent features, but casual writing and chat still work.
- Drop to Free. GPT-class chat, basic uploads and image creation stay available with tighter daily caps.
To switch plans, open the same Settings > Subscription panel and pick the lower tier instead of Cancel plan. A downgrade keeps your account and history intact and starts at the next billing date.
Is the free tier enough?
For a few conversations a day, probably. The free tier runs OpenAI's latest instant model and handles most writing, coding help and general questions. You hit the message cap faster than a paid user, and Deep Research, agent mode and the higher limits stay locked.
You will miss Plus if you lean on ChatGPT all day, generate a lot of images, run long document analysis, or use agent and research features for work. If it is a work tool that earns you income, note that a paid AI subscription can be a claimable tax deduction in Australia, which changes the real monthly cost.
Refunds
OpenAI's terms say subscription payments are non-refundable. You keep access until the end of the period you paid for, but you do not get money back for the unused days by default. Two exceptions exist:
- Accidental charges. If you were billed by mistake, contact OpenAI through the help-centre chat widget within 14 days of the charge and ask for a refund. Approved refunds are processed in about 5 to 7 business days.
- Statutory 14-day refunds apply in the EU, the UK and Turkey, where cancelling within 14 days of purchase triggers a prorated refund. Australia is not on that list, so there is no automatic 14-day money-back window here.
Under Australian Consumer Law you can claim a refund if the service is faulty or was misrepresented, but not for simply changing your mind. Cancel-and-keep-access-till-period-end is the realistic outcome for most Australian users.
Frequently asked questions
Will I lose my chat history? No. Cancelling drops you to the free tier but leaves your account, conversation history, saved memories, custom GPTs and uploaded files in place. History only disappears if you delete individual chats or delete the whole account.
Can I still use ChatGPT for free after I cancel? Yes. The account reverts to the free tier automatically at the end of your paid period. You keep general chat, basic file uploads and image creation, with lower daily message limits than any paid plan.
How do I cancel if I subscribed on my iPhone? Through Apple, not through OpenAI. Open Settings on the iPhone, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, select ChatGPT, then Cancel Subscription. The ChatGPT website cannot cancel a subscription that Apple is billing.
Do I get a refund for the unused month? Usually not. OpenAI's default policy is non-refundable, so you keep Plus until the current cycle ends rather than getting the remaining days back as cash. The EU, UK and Turkey have a 14-day prorated refund right; Australia does not. Accidental charges can be refunded via the help-centre chat within 14 days.
What is the difference between cancelling and deleting my account? Cancelling stops the paid subscription and moves you to the free tier, keeping your history and login. Deleting the account removes everything permanently: your chats, memories, custom GPTs and the login itself, and it cannot be undone. Cancel if you want to stop paying; delete only if you want to leave OpenAI entirely.
