ChatGPT is one of the easier subscriptions to cancel. No retention screens, no hidden fees, and the free tier still gives you access to GPT-4o (with limits). The main question isn't how to cancel, it's whether you still need to be paying.
How to cancel (website)
- Go to chatgpt.com and sign in
- Click your profile icon (bottom left) > Settings
- Go to Subscription
- Click Manage my subscription
- Click Cancel plan
- Confirm the cancellation
Cancel from iPhone or Android
If you subscribed through the ChatGPT mobile app:
- iPhone: Open the ChatGPT app > tap your profile > Subscription > Manage Subscription. This redirects to Apple's subscription management. Find ChatGPT and cancel.
- Android: Same flow, but it redirects to Google Play subscription management.
If you signed up via the app, you must cancel through Apple or Google. The ChatGPT website won't show a cancel option for App Store subscriptions.
Your account reverts to the free tier. You keep your entire chat history, custom GPTs, and any files you uploaded. You lose access to GPT-4.5, higher message limits, voice mode, image generation (DALL-E), and advanced data analysis. The free tier still includes GPT-4o with lower usage caps.
Current pricing
ChatGPT is billed in USD (no AUD pricing):
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | GPT-4o (limited), basic features |
| Plus | $20 USD/mo (~$32 AUD) | Higher limits, GPT-4.5, DALL-E, voice, file analysis |
| Pro | $200 USD/mo (~$320 AUD) | Unlimited GPT-4.5, research mode, highest priority |
| Team | $25 USD/mo per user | Plus features + workspace, admin controls |
Australian users are charged in USD. Your bank will apply its own exchange rate, so the AUD amount varies slightly each month.
Is the free tier enough?
For casual use, probably. ChatGPT Free includes GPT-4o, which handles most conversations, coding help, and writing tasks. You hit rate limits faster than Plus users, but for a few conversations per day, it works fine.
You'll miss Plus if you: use ChatGPT heavily throughout the day, rely on image generation, need file uploads and data analysis, or want access to GPT-4.5 for complex reasoning tasks.
No annual plan
Unlike most subscriptions, ChatGPT Plus is monthly only. No annual commitment, no early termination fee. You can cancel and resubscribe whenever you want with no penalty.
ChatGPT cancelled. But $32 a month adds up, especially when it's sitting next to other subscriptions you're not tracking.
Most people find 3-5 subscriptions they forgot about when they actually look. Upload a bank statement to Subtracker and see every recurring charge in 2 minutes. No bank login. No manual entry. $12.99 once.
