Every subscription you signed up for through an app on your iPhone is billed through Apple unless the app sent you to a website to pay. Here's how to find all of them and cancel the ones you don't want.
Find all your subscriptions
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap your name at the top (your Apple ID)
- Tap Subscriptions
This shows every active and expired subscription managed through your Apple ID, including free trials that are about to convert to paid.
Cancel a subscription
- In the Subscriptions list, tap the subscription you want to cancel
- Tap Cancel Subscription (or Cancel Free Trial)
- Confirm by tapping Confirm
The subscription stays active until the end of the current billing period. You won't be charged again.
Alternative: cancel via the App Store
- Open the App Store
- Tap your profile icon (top right)
- Tap Subscriptions
- Find the subscription and tap Cancel
Cancel via the web (any device)
If you don't have your iPhone handy:
- Go to account.apple.com in any browser
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Go to Subscriptions
- Find the subscription and click Cancel
This is useful if your phone is lost, broken, or you're helping someone manage their subscriptions remotely.
Cancel a free trial before being charged
Free trials on iPhone auto-renew into paid subscriptions unless you cancel. The trick: you can cancel a free trial immediately after signing up and still keep the trial for the full period. Apple won't charge you, and you get to use the trial until it expires.
Set a reminder to cancel on the day you start any free trial.
Find hidden or forgotten subscriptions
Some subscriptions don't show up in the obvious places. Check these:
- Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions catches most App Store subscriptions
- Settings > Apple ID > Media & Purchases > Manage Payments shows your payment method and recent charges
- Check your email for purchase confirmation emails from Apple (search "Your receipt from Apple" in your inbox)
- Check your bank statement for charges from "APPLE.COM/BILL" or "Apple Services"
Subscriptions billed directly by apps (not through Apple) won't appear in your iPhone subscription list. Services like Netflix, Spotify, and ChatGPT may bill you directly if you signed up on their website rather than through the app. You'll need to cancel those through each service's own website.
Cancel subscriptions for family members
If you use Family Sharing, each family member manages their own subscriptions. You can't cancel someone else's subscription from your device. They need to cancel it from their own Apple ID.
Exception: if you're the organiser and a child under 13 is on your family plan, their subscriptions appear under your account and you can cancel them.
Get a refund for an accidental charge
If you were charged for a subscription you didn't mean to sign up for, or a free trial converted without your knowledge:
- Go to reportaproblem.apple.com
- Sign in with your Apple ID
- Find the charge in your purchase history
- Select Request a refund
- Choose a reason (e.g., "I didn't intend to purchase this item")
Apple is generally reasonable about refunding accidental subscription charges, especially first-time requests. Refunds typically process within 48 hours.
Tips for avoiding surprise subscriptions
- Turn off in-app purchase confirmation shortcuts. If you have Face ID or Touch ID set to confirm purchases without a password, a quick double-click can sign you up for something unintentionally.
- Check for free trials before downloading apps. Some apps require a subscription to use any features and start a free trial the moment you open them.
- Review subscriptions monthly. Make it a habit to check Settings > Subscriptions once a month. It takes 30 seconds.
