Cancel difficulty: Hard

Foxtel Residential (the satellite/iQ box service) requires a phone call to cancel. In 2026. You cannot do it online. You'll also need to deal with a retention agent, possibly an early termination fee, and equipment return. It's one of the harder Australian subscriptions to cancel.

Foxtel Now (the streaming-only service) is much easier and can be done online. Make sure you know which product you have before you start.

Which Foxtel product do you have?

This matters because each cancels differently:

  • Foxtel Residential (iQ box/satellite): Physical set-top box in your home. Requires a phone call to cancel. May have a contract.
  • Foxtel Now (streaming): No box, watch on your own devices. Cancel online. No contract.
  • Kayo Sports: Separate product, separate subscription. Cancel through Hubbl.
  • Binge: Separate product. Cancel through Binge.

Cancel Foxtel Residential (iQ box)

You must call or use live chat. There is no self-serve online cancellation.

Phone: 1300 657 346 (Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm AEST)

What to say

"I'd like to cancel my Foxtel subscription effective today. I've already made my decision and I'm not interested in any offers or discounts. Please process the cancellation."

IVR shortcut: Press #7 to skip straight to the disconnections department.

Before you call, have your account number ready (top-right corner of your monthly bill).

What to expect on the call

Dark pattern warning

Foxtel's retention department is aggressive. A call that should take 5 minutes regularly takes 30-45 minutes. The agent will offer you a discount (commonly 50% off) that was never proactively available to you as a loyal customer. A former Foxtel call centre worker confirmed on Reddit that agents had minimum call-length KPIs. If they're stalling, repeat: "Please process the cancellation. My next call is to the Ombudsman."

Early termination fees

  • Month-to-month: No fee. Service ends at the end of your current billing period.
  • 12-month contract: Maximum early termination fee of $300, prorated by months remaining. The fewer months left, the lower the fee. Ask the agent for the exact amount before confirming.

Equipment return

You must return your iQ4 or iQ5 set-top box. Foxtel will send return instructions by email or SMS after cancellation, usually with a prepaid Australia Post satchel.

iQ3 boxes do not need to be returned. If you don't return equipment that's required, Foxtel charges an Unrecovered Equipment Fee.

The satellite dish stays on your house. Foxtel does not remove it. You'll need to arrange removal yourself if you want it gone.

Cancel Foxtel Now (streaming)

This one is straightforward and fully online:

  1. Go to foxtel.com.au/now in a desktop browser (not a TV app or mobile app)
  2. Click the cog icon (top right) > My Account
  3. Scroll down and click Cancel Subscription
  4. A pop-up will show content recommendations. Click Cancel Account
  5. Check for a confirmation email
After you cancel

Access continues until the end of your billing period. No refund for unused days. Foxtel Now has no contract and no cancellation fee.

Cancel Telstra Foxtel

Telstra stopped offering new Foxtel plans from 1 February 2024, but existing customers need to cancel through Telstra:

  1. Call Telstra or use the My Telstra app chat
  2. Say "disconnect" to the IVR to get to the right department
  3. Early termination fees may apply. The Telstra agent can quote the exact amount
  4. You'll need to return the iQ set-top box, power lead, power pack, and Smartcard (not applicable for iQ3)

The cheaper alternative

If you're cancelling Foxtel because of price, consider replacing it with Kayo ($29.99/month for sport) and Binge ($10/month for entertainment). Combined, that's about $40/month for most of the same content that costs $108-$150/month on Foxtel Residential.

You lose a few things (some niche channels, the physical box for recording), but for most people, the streaming combo covers everything they actually watch.

Worth knowing

  • The 50% retention discount. Foxtel almost always offers 50% off when you try to cancel. A 25-year customer reported on Reddit being offered $75/month down from $150, with the agent admitting "we don't proactively offer discounts." If you want to stay but pay less, threatening to cancel is the way to get a deal.
  • Australian click-to-cancel laws. The Albanese Government announced in November 2025 a plan to ban "subscription traps," specifically targeting services that require a phone call to cancel when sign-up was done online. When this passes, Foxtel Residential will have to offer online cancellation.
  • Max (HBO) is included. All Foxtel plans currently include Max (HBO/Warner Bros content) free for the first 12 months. If that's what you're watching, check when your free period ends before cancelling.

Foxtel down. That was the hard one. Now check what else is quietly billing you.
