Vodafone Australia is part of TPG Telecom (merged in 2020), but the brand, plans, and support channels are still separate from TPG and iiNet. Cancelling a Vodafone mobile plan is different from cancelling Vodafone broadband, and if you have both, you need to cancel each one individually.
The process itself is straightforward. The part that trips people up is the order of operations: if you want to keep your phone number, you need to port it before you cancel. Get that wrong and the number is gone.
Cancel Vodafone mobile
If you're keeping your number (most people)
Do not cancel your Vodafone service first. Port your number to your new provider instead.
- Sign up with your new mobile provider
- Give them your Vodafone account number (find it in the My Vodafone app under Account Details, or on your bill)
- Your new provider requests the port from Vodafone
- Once the port completes (a few hours to two business days), your Vodafone mobile service cancels automatically
The account holder name must match between providers for the port to go through. Vodafone charges an $8 number transfer fee on your final bill.
If you're not keeping the number
Chat via the My Vodafone app (24/7), or call 1555 from your Vodafone phone, or 1300 650 410 from any phone. If you're overseas, call +61 426 320 000.
Your number stays active until the end of your current billing cycle.
Prepaid mobile
No formal cancellation needed. Stop recharging and your service will expire on its own after 120 days past your last recharge expiry date. If you want to port the number, the prepaid service must still be active when your new provider requests the port.
Device repayments
If you're paying off a phone through Vodafone (a Mobile Payment Plan over 12, 24, or 36 months), the remaining balance is due immediately when you cancel. Check what you owe in the My Vodafone app before you do anything. On older plans (Vodafone Infinite, Red Plus, Red Plan), the same applies.
For month-to-month SIM-only plans, there's nothing extra to pay.
Cancel Vodafone broadband (NBN)
Call 1300 801 122 to cancel your Vodafone nbn service.
Unlike mobile, there's no self-service cancel option for broadband. You need to speak to someone.
Modem costs if you leave early
Month-to-month nbn plans: No early exit fee on the plan itself. But if your plan came with a Vodafone Wi-Fi Hub modem, that modem is "free" only if you stay connected for 24 months. Leave before then and you pay $7.50 per remaining month as a lump sum. For example, leaving after 12 months costs $90 for the modem ($7.50 x 12 remaining months). The total modem cost over 24 months is $180.
24-month contract nbn plans: An early termination fee applies, calculated by the number of full months remaining on your contract. Ask the agent for the exact figure before confirming.
Relocating: If you're cancelling because Vodafone nbn isn't available at your new address, early termination fees may be waived. Ask when you call.
Switching to another NBN provider
Have your new provider place their order first. They can activate on your existing line, and you cancel Vodafone afterwards. This avoids a gap in internet service.
Current pricing
| Plan | Price (AUD/mo) | Data |
|---|---|---|
| Small SIM-only | $53 | 60GB |
| Medium SIM-only | $63 | 200GB |
| Large SIM-only | $73 | 400GB |
| Essential nbn (25/8 Mbps) | $74 | Unlimited |
| Standard nbn (50/20 Mbps) | $84 | Unlimited |
| Premium nbn (100/20 Mbps) | $94 | Unlimited |
Vodafone regularly runs promotional pricing ($10/month off for the first 6 or 12 months), so your actual rate may be lower than the listed price. Check what you're currently paying in the My Vodafone app before deciding.
If you're on a phone plan with a bundled device, the monthly cost is higher and includes the device repayment component.
Things to check before you cancel
- Two-factor authentication: If any accounts use your Vodafone number for SMS verification codes, update them to your new number first. Once the number is disconnected, those codes stop arriving.
- Account holder only: Only the account holder can cancel. If the account is in someone else's name, they need to make the call or authorise the chat.
- Get confirmation: Always ask for a cancellation reference number and written confirmation (email or SMS). If something goes wrong later, you'll want proof.
- Disconnected number quarantine: If your number is disconnected (not ported), it goes into a 6-month quarantine. Vodafone may be able to reconnect it during that window, but it's not guaranteed. Port first if you want to keep it.
Mobile service ends when your port completes (if porting) or at the end of your billing cycle (if not porting). Broadband disconnects after Vodafone processes your cancellation. Your final bill includes any outstanding device repayments, modem charges, the $8 porting fee (if applicable), and any early termination fees. Prepaid credit is generally not refundable.
Cheaper alternatives on the same network
Since the Optus-TPG Telecom network-sharing deal in 2024, Vodafone's coverage has improved significantly. But you don't have to pay Vodafone prices to use the Vodafone network. MVNOs like Felix, iiNet Mobile, and Lebara all run on the same network, often at half the price. Felix (owned by TPG Telecom) offers unlimited data for $35/month. Worth checking before you cancel if network coverage isn't the issue.
