What Is a STEAMGAMES.COM Charge on Your Statement?

A STEAMGAMES.COM charge on an Australian bank statement is a purchase from Steam, the PC game store run by Valve Corporation. Valve's own support page heads its billing answer "I have charges from Valve Software, Steampowered.com, or Steam Games that I do not recognize", confirming that its charges reach statements under all three names. The money went on games, downloadable content, in-game items or a Steam Wallet top-up, so the amount is whatever was bought rather than a fixed monthly fee.

Who the charge belongs to

Valve Corporation is the merchant on every Steam purchase, and steamgames.com is one of its own domains. The store is branded Steam at steampowered.com, so the statement line rarely matches the purchase you remember.

Why the line looks like that

Card statements carry a short merchant descriptor plus a location field, and Valve fills the first with a domain instead of the brand name. A full line often reads STEAMGAMES.COM 425-9522985 WA. The digits are the merchant's US contact number, and WA is Washington state, not Western Australia. Steam's privacy policy gives Valve's address as PO Box 1688, Bellevue, WA 98009.

Paying through PayPal changes the line again. It comes from PayPal, with Steam or Valve truncated after the asterisk. A bank that shortens descriptors to its character limit can leave you with STEAMGAMES and no location at all. For the other statement lines that hide a familiar merchant, see the guide to charges you do not recognise on an Australian statement.

Steam is not a subscription

A Steam charge is a one-off purchase unless you set up something that repeats. Valve states that it has no recurring fees or monthly charges unless a charge is explicitly part of an online game subscription. An identical amount on the same date each month is therefore a game with its own paid subscription renewing, or a recurring Wallet top-up you set up.

Recurring gaming charges bill under their own names. If you are chasing a monthly one, check whether it is PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online.

If you think it is yours

Match the date and amount against your purchase history. Sign in at help.steampowered.com or in the Steam client, click your account name at the top right, then Account details, then View purchase history. Each entry shows the date, the amount and the item.

Your statement total can run higher than the purchase history total. Valve says banks in some countries add processing fees, taxes or conversion charges even when the purchase was made in local currency, and that Steam does not control them. A small unexplained gap is a question for your bank, not Steam.

Valve refunds games requested through help.steampowered.com within fourteen days of purchase if the title has been played for less than two hours. Steam Wallet funds are refundable within fourteen days if none have been spent. A renewable subscription can be refunded within 48 hours of purchase or of an automatic renewal if the content has not been used that billing cycle, and you can cancel it any time in your account details.

If nobody recognises it

Work through this in order before you ring the bank.

  1. Ask everyone who can use the card. Valve's first recommendation is to check with other household members or anyone with access to your payment method. A child or partner buying a game or a $4 in-game item is the usual answer.
  2. Search your email for a Steam receipt with that amount. Purchases send a confirmation, so a receipt settles it either way.
  3. Check the purchase history of every Steam account used on the household PC, not only yours.
  4. If the line came through PayPal, open your PayPal activity, where the purchase details sit.
  5. Report it to Valve. On help.steampowered.com, select "I have charges from Steam that I didn't make"; there is a path for people with no Steam account. Send the name as it appears on your statement, the exact amount and date, the card type, the last four digits and your contact details. Steam Support will never ask for your full card number, expiry or CVV, so treat any request for those as fraud.
  6. Raise a dispute with your bank. For an unauthorised transaction, CommBank says it decides disputes by reference to the ePayments Code and the Mastercard, Visa and eftpos scheme rules. If you did authorise the purchase, the bank expects you to try the merchant first. Chargebacks run on card scheme deadlines, so lodge it rather than waiting to see whether the charge repeats.

One charge decoded is one down. The rest of the card is the question.

When it is an authorisation, not a purchase

A line for $0 or a stray dollar or two is a card check, not a purchase. Your bank authorises it to confirm the card is valid, and it never settles. Valve sends two small pending authorisations to verify a new card, in the same currency as your Steam Wallet, and says your bank can take up to 30 days to remove them whether you complete the verification or not.

In your banking app, a pending authorisation is labelled pending, comes off your available funds but leaves your account balance untouched, and has no matching line in your purchase history. CommBank says a pending transaction generally takes 3 to 5 business days, sometimes up to 10, to either process fully or expire, and that an expired one disappears and returns the money to your available balance. A settled charge has already debited the account balance. Once a transaction is authorised it cannot be cancelled, so a pending line is a wait or a dispute, never a cancel.

FAQ

Is STEAMGAMES.COM the same as STEAMPOWERED.COM? Yes. Valve's support page treats charges labelled Valve Software, Steampowered.com and Steam Games as the same thing, a purchase on Steam billed by Valve Corporation.

Why is a Steam charge on my statement every month? Steam has no standing monthly fee. A charge that repeats at the same amount is either a game carrying its own paid subscription or a recurring Wallet top-up. Check your purchase history for what renewed, then cancel it in your Steam account details.

Does a Steam charge attract an international transaction fee? It can. Valve is a US company, so whether you pay a foreign transaction fee or a conversion cost depends on your card and your Steam Wallet currency. Valve says those bank fees are outside its control, which is why a statement total can exceed the price in your purchase history.

My child bought something on my card. Can I get it back? Ask Valve. It refunds games within fourteen days if played under two hours, and its support page says you can still contact Steam Support when a household member bought something without your permission. Removing the saved card from the Steam account stops the next one.

How do I find every other charge like this one? Read three to twelve months of statements and list everything that repeats, the method set out in the guide to finding hidden subscriptions.
