A QANTAS AIRWAYS MASCOT charge on an Australian statement is a payment to Qantas Airways Limited, the airline. Mascot is the Sydney suburb where Qantas has its head office, not a second business or a fee, and it rides in the location field of the transaction no matter where you booked or flew.
The merchant is Qantas Airways Limited
The Australian Business Register lists Qantas Airways Limited under ABN 16 009 661 901, an Australian public company with a main business location of NSW 2020 and a registered trading name of QANTAS AIRWAYS LTD dating to 2002. Postcode 2020 is Mascot. Qantas's own corporate contacts page puts the head office at 10 Bourke Road, Mascot NSW 2020.
The same ABN also carries the business names QANTAS, QANTAS INSURANCE, QANTAS WINE and Qantas Store Australia, so several Qantas businesses sit behind it. If you came here for the address rather than a charge, 10 Bourke Road is it, and the other thing people mean by "Qantas mascot" is the flying kangaroo on the tail.
Why the suburb appears on the line
Every card transaction carries two fields your bank prints together: the merchant name and the merchant location. Qantas bills from its registered address, so the location reads Mascot on a Sydney to Perth fare, a Los Angeles flight and a seat selection fee alike. The same line also appears as QANTAS AIRWAYS LTD MASCOT, sometimes with a country code after the suburb, sometimes truncated to fit your bank's character limit.
The descriptor tells you the entity that billed you. It does not tell you what you bought.
What Qantas charges usually are
| What it is | How it behaves |
|---|---|
| A fare or a fare difference | One charge per booking, or one per ticket on a multi-passenger booking |
| Seat selection, extra baggage, carbon offset | A smaller separate charge at booking or later |
| Qantas Club Flexible membership | Recurring, every 28 days |
| Qantas Club 1 or 2-year membership | One charge, then nothing until renewal |
| Buying Qantas Points | One-off |
| Qantas Wine or the Qantas Store | One-off, same ABN, though the statement name can differ |
Qantas Club Flexible is the one that behaves like a subscription. Its terms say it auto-renews every 28 days unless cancelled, with the second payment on the 26th day after the first and every 28 days from the last payment after that. Qantas's help centre lists the rate as $99 every 28 days plus a join fee. A 28-day cycle is not a month, so the charge lands about 13 times a year and drifts a few days earlier each time, which is why people stop recognising it.
The 1 or 2-year membership charges once, goes quiet for a year, then reappears as a large unfamiliar amount.
If you recognise Qantas but not the amount
Search your inbox for "Qantas" and the exact amount. Fares, extras and Qantas Club renewals all generate a receipt, and the booking reference in that email matches the amount on your statement.
Then check My Account on qantas.com for your bookings and your Qantas Club renewal date, which also shows on the digital membership card. To stop a Qantas Club Flexible membership, cancel in My Account or call the Qantas Service Centre. Clause 4.10 of the terms gives no refund for the remaining days and runs lounge access to the end of the current 28-day period, so cancelling early in a period costs you the rest of it.
If several Qantas lines are stacking up alongside other charges you cannot place, work through how to find hidden subscriptions on your bank statement rather than chasing them one at a time.
If you do not recognise it at all
- Search your email for "Qantas", then for the amount on its own. A booking made through a travel agent still posts to Qantas, but the confirmation sits in your inbox under a different sender.
- Check who else uses the card. A partner, a parent or an additional cardholder booking a flight is the most common answer. CommBank lists an extra cardholder's purchase first on its own unrecognised transaction checklist.
- Check your Qantas Frequent Flyer account for bookings and for a Qantas Club membership you joined and forgot.
- Contact your bank and dispute it if none of that explains the charge. CommBank says it assesses unauthorised card disputes against the ePayments Code and the Mastercard, Visa and eftpos scheme rules. Chargebacks run on scheme time limits, so raising it now is worth more than waiting to be sure.
Every unidentified line comes down to the same sequence, set out in the guide to unknown charges on Australian bank statements.
One Qantas line is easy to chase. A year of statements where half the merchant names are suburbs and trading names is not.
Upload a bank statement to find recurring charges, review your subscriptions and track renewals. No bank login required. Your first scan shows three finds free; the full tracker is $29 AUD once.
See what you're paying forWhen it is a hold rather than a real charge
A travel booking often produces two entries: a pending authorisation placed when the card is checked, and the settled charge that leaves your account. The pending one can match the fare exactly, which is why a single booking can look like a double charge.
Your banking app separates them. A pending transaction reduces your available funds but not your account balance, and carries a pending label. CommBank says pending transactions generally take 3 to 5 business days to process and can take up to 10, after which they either settle or expire. An expired authorisation disappears from your history and the amount returns to your available balance, meaning the merchant never took it. You cannot cancel a pending transaction, and your bank cannot investigate a dispute until it has finished processing.
If you see two identical Qantas amounts and one is pending, wait out that window before calling anyone. If both settle, raise the duplicate with Qantas first.
FAQ
Is a QANTAS AIRWAYS MASCOT charge a scam? Not on the face of it. The line matches Qantas Airways Limited's registered trading name and head office suburb, which is what a legitimate Qantas charge looks like. Whether you authorised that particular one is the separate question.
Why does my statement say Mascot when I flew out of Melbourne? The location field holds the merchant's registered address, not the airport. Qantas bills from Mascot, so every Qantas charge reads Mascot regardless of route.
Is Qantas Club a subscription? Qantas Club Flexible is. It renews every 28 days until you cancel it, so it charges roughly 13 times a year. The 1 and 2-year memberships are prepaid, which makes them easier to forget between renewals. Both belong on the list when you cancel the subscriptions you no longer use.
Why are there two Qantas charges for one booking? A multi-passenger booking can be ticketed as one charge per passenger, and an authorisation hold can sit alongside the settled charge for a few days. Fares, seat fees, baggage and Qantas Club all post under the same merchant name, so check whether one of the two is still marked pending before treating it as a duplicate.
