Cancel World Gym in writing to your home club, and keep the confirmation. Once your minimum term is over, you give 30 days' written notice and pay for that final month, with no exit fee. If you're still inside your minimum term (usually 12 months, sometimes 24), you'll pay an early termination fee first, and how much depends entirely on your contract. Email is the fastest channel and gives you the paper trail you'll need when the charges don't stop.
That last part is the catch. World Gym Australia has 59 clubs (as of April 2026) and every one is independently owned and operated, so the person processing your cancellation is a local franchise, not a head office. Billing runs through a third party, Debitsuccess (now Xplor Debit Success), which keeps debiting until the club tells it to stop. Members across ProductReview and Trustpilot report cancelling correctly and still being charged for months. Do it in writing, get confirmation, and watch your bank statement.
Check your contract first
World Gym sells fixed-term contracts, and the cancellation rules depend on where you are in yours.
Inside your minimum term. Most memberships lock you in for 12 months; some clubs sell 24-month contracts (a Chullora sign-up form lists a 24-month term at $24.95/week). Weekly rates typically run $21.95 to $29.95. Cancelling early triggers a termination fee (see below).
After your minimum term. Your membership rolls to an ongoing month-to-month arrangement. No new lock-in. Cancel any time with 30 days' written notice and no penalty.
If you don't know which stage you're in, check your original membership agreement or the sign-up confirmation from Debitsuccess, or ask your home club in writing. Do not rely on a verbal answer at reception.
How to cancel
- Write your cancellation request. Include your full name, membership number if you have it, your home club, and a clear statement that you're cancelling. State the effective date ("at the end of my minimum term" or "with 30 days' notice from today").
- Email it to your home club. Send it to the club you signed up at, not another branch. Email is valid written notice under Australian state fitness rules, and it timestamps your request. Keep the sent copy.
- Use the club's cancellation form if they have one. Some clubs ask you to sign a form at reception. Do it if it's convenient, but the email starts your notice clock either way.
- Serve the notice period. Expect to pay for the 30 days after your notice is received. Billing continues during this window.
- Get written confirmation. Ask the club to confirm your cancellation date and final payment amount in writing. It isn't cancelled until you have that.
- Return your access tag. An unreturned or replacement 24/7 access tag costs around $49.
World Gym clubs bill through Debitsuccess, a separate company. When you cancel, the club has to instruct Debitsuccess to stop the direct debit. Members report the club acknowledging the cancellation, then Debitsuccess keeping the charges running for months because the instruction never got passed on. One ProductReview member wrote that they cancelled in writing on 15 March and were still being debited on 24 April despite submitting two cancellation forms. Under Western Australia's Fitness Industry Code of Practice, cancelling the third-party debit is the gym's responsibility, not yours. Get written confirmation and check your statement anyway.
The 30-day notice period
You give 30 days' written notice once you're past the minimum term, and you pay for those 30 days. This is standard across World Gym's contracts and matches the maximum notice period allowed under Australian state fitness codes: your membership must end no later than 30 days from the date you give notice.
To avoid rolling into month-to-month, send your notice at least 30 days before your minimum term ends. A member at World Gym Midland did exactly that, emailed more than 30 days out, got an acknowledgement, and was still chased for payments after the term ended because the club never actioned it. The lesson isn't to skip the notice. It's to keep the acknowledgement and follow up hard if debits continue.
You cannot shorten the notice by cancelling your direct debit early. If you stop payments before the notice period ends, the club can treat the account as in arrears and refuse to finalise the cancellation until it's paid.
Early termination fees (inside the minimum term)
If you cancel before your minimum term ends, you'll pay an early exit fee, and the amount varies by club and contract. There is no single World Gym figure. Two structures show up in their sign-up terms:
- A fixed fee. One "All Access" contract sets a $300 fee for cancelling within the minimum term.
- A percentage of what's left. A 24-month contract sets the fee at 50% of the remaining balance.
Members have reported quoted figures of $200, $300, and even $1,000, depending on the club and how much time is left. Ask your club for the exact figure in writing before you commit to anything, and check it against your own membership agreement. If 30 days or fewer remain on your term, you generally serve out the notice period instead of paying the early-exit fee.
Cooling-off period
You can cancel within 7 days of joining and walk away, per World Gym's sign-up terms. In Queensland the statutory minimum is shorter at 48 hours, so check the date on your agreement, but World Gym's own forms grant 7 days across the board. Cancel in writing within the window and you exit the contract for only a reasonable administration fee (often around $50, set by the club) plus the cost of any service you already used. Administration and joining fees are typically non-refundable even inside cooling-off.
If you signed up in the last week, send your written cancellation now. Don't wait for the weekend.
The suspension upsell
Expect to be offered a suspension instead of a cancellation. World Gym contracts let you freeze for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of four weeks at around $5/week. A freeze pauses your payments; it does not end your contract or your minimum term. If you're leaving for good, a suspension just delays the problem and keeps you locked in. Cancel instead.
Dealing with the retention pitch
Franchise staff are often incentivised to keep you, and the experience swings from club to club. Common tactics: telling you to come in during staffed hours to "discuss" it, offering the suspension, or asking you to find someone to take over your contract. You do not have to attend in person. WA Consumer Protection states plainly that you don't need to attend a club or use a specific form to cancel, and that high-pressure tactics after a cancellation request are banned under the Fitness Industry Code of Practice.
"I'm giving written notice to cancel my World Gym membership, effective at the end of my notice period. Please confirm the cancellation date and my final payment in writing, and confirm you've instructed Debitsuccess to stop the direct debit. I'm not interested in a suspension, downgrade, or transfer."
If reception says they "can't process cancellations" or the manager isn't in, ask for the email address and send your notice on the spot. The notice period starts when the club receives it, not when someone gets around to reading it.
Medical and hardship exemptions
You can exit early without the full termination fee in limited circumstances, all needing documentation:
- Permanent incapacity to exercise. Provide a doctor's certificate confirming you're permanently unable to exercise. World Gym's terms waive or reduce the fee, and under WA's code the cancellation takes effect immediately, with you charged only for services already used.
- Bankruptcy. Generally accepted with documentation.
- Relocation or genuine hardship. Assessed case by case by the club. Not guaranteed in the standard terms, so ask your specific club and get any waiver in writing.
If they keep charging you
This is where most World Gym complaints land. If you've given proper written notice and the debits continue:
- Email the club manager directly. Attach your original cancellation email and its acknowledgement. State the date debits should have stopped and ask for a refund of anything taken since.
- Contact Debitsuccess. They collect the payments and can see the club's instructions. Use the contact details on your Debitsuccess payment notice or at debitsuccess.com.au. Tell them the club has cancelled and ask them to stop the debit.
- Lodge a complaint with your state consumer regulator. NSW Fair Trading, Consumer Affairs Victoria, QLD Office of Fair Trading, Consumer Protection WA, Consumer and Business Services SA. Cancellation is the single most common fitness complaint WA Consumer Protection receives, and regulators take it seriously.
- Cancel the direct debit with your bank. Once your notice period has passed, your bank can stop the payments and may reverse recent unauthorised debits. Have your written cancellation and confirmation ready as proof.
Cancellation process designed to trap you. Tried to cancel. Had to contact them three separate times before they actually processed it. They refused to tell me my final billing date despite repeated requests.
What to watch out for
- Dishonour fees. A failed or bounced payment triggers a default fee of around $14.95 per dishonour. Don't cancel your card mid-contract to force the issue; you'll rack up these fees and hand the club a reason to stall.
- Franchise inconsistency. What works at World Gym Marrickville may not work at Malaga. The billing setup and the terms are broadly the same, but the responsiveness is not. Keep everything in writing.
- The silent rollover. No one emails to say your 12-month term has ended. It just keeps billing month to month. Many members are already free to cancel with 30 days' notice and don't realise it.
- "We didn't receive it." The most common excuse for a non-processed cancellation. Send from an address you control, keep the sent copy, and if you can, request a read receipt or reply confirming receipt.
Your membership stays active until the end of your notice period, so keep using the gym until then. After the final payment, your access tag is deactivated. Return it to avoid the ~$49 replacement fee. Check your bank statement for at least two billing cycles to confirm Debitsuccess has actually stopped. Keep every cancellation email and confirmation for 12 months in case the charges restart. While you watch for stray debits, an app that finds every recurring charge in your statement makes sure World Gym is the only thing you're checking for.
