Cancel difficulty: Medium

Two warnings before you start: you cannot cancel Shudder from the app, and Shudder has an F rating on the BBB with over 100 complaints about being charged after cancellation. Take a screenshot of your confirmation.

How to cancel (direct billing)

If you pay Shudder directly with a card or PayPal:

  1. Go to shudder.com and sign in
  2. Click your profile icon (top right) and go to My Account
  3. Scroll to Membership Settings and click Cancel Membership
  4. A retention screen appears. Click I want to cancel
  5. Select a reason from the dropdown
  6. Click Cancel My Membership
  7. A final screen offers a free month. Click No thanks, finish my cancellation

That's at least 4-5 clicks and a mandatory reason dropdown. The "Add my free month" button on the last screen is styled more prominently than the actual cancel confirmation.

Cancel if you subscribed through Apple

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone > tap your name > Subscriptions
  2. Find Shudder and tap Cancel Subscription

If you signed up through the iOS app, the cancel option will not appear on Shudder's website. You must cancel through Apple.

Cancel if you subscribed through Google Play

  1. Open the Google Play Store app
  2. Tap your profile icon > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions
  3. Find Shudder > Cancel subscription

Cancel if you subscribed through Amazon

If you added Shudder as an Amazon Prime Video Channel:

  1. Log into your Amazon account
  2. Go to Prime Video Channels
  3. Find Shudder > Cancel Channel
After you cancel

Access continues until the end of your billing period. No partial refund. Your account is not deleted, so you can resubscribe later. Shudder's refund policy: contact support within 2 days of a monthly charge or 7 days of an annual charge, with "Refund Request" in the subject line.

Current pricing (AUD)

PlanPrice
Monthly$7.99/mo
Annual$74.99/yr (~$6.25/mo)

A 7-day free trial is available but requires a credit card upfront. Shudder uses the global site (shudder.com) with AUD pricing applied based on your location. There is no shudder.com.au.

Billing complaints

Shudder has a serious track record of charging people after cancellation. On Trustpilot, 84% of 416 reviews are 1-star, with the most common complaint being continued charges months or even years after cancelling. One user was charged $71.88 annually two years after claiming to have cancelled. Standard customer support is reported as non-responsive.

If you're worried about this: cancel, screenshot the confirmation, then remove your payment method from your Shudder account. If charges continue, dispute them with your bank.

Free horror alternatives in Australia

You don't need to pay for horror content in Australia. These are all free:

  • SBS On Demand has a dedicated horror collection including The Babadook and international horror films
  • Tubi launched in Australia with roughly 1,000 horror titles, all free with ads
  • Pluto TV has dedicated horror channels (Scream, Paranormal Activity franchises)
  • Kanopy (free with a library card) has curated arthouse horror

One horror subscription sorted. What other forgotten subscriptions are lurking in your statements?

Most people find 3-5 subscriptions they forgot about when they actually look. Upload a bank statement to Subtracker and see every recurring charge in 2 minutes. No bank login. No manual entry. $12.99 once.
