Planet Fitness Australia doesn't let you cancel online. You need to send a written notice to your home club, either by email or letter. It's not hard, but it's not the one-click process you'd expect from a gym that lets you sign up on your phone in two minutes.
How to cancel
You have two options:
Cancel by email
- Find your home club's email address on the Planet Fitness Australia website
- Send an email from the same email address you used to sign up
- Include your full name, membership number, contact details, and that you want to cancel
- Ask for written confirmation of the cancellation and the effective date
Cancel by letter
- Write a letter with your full name, contact information, membership number, and a request to cancel
- Sign it
- Post or hand-deliver it to your home club
Either way, you need to give 7 days' notice. That's shorter than most gym chains in Australia, which typically require 14-30 days.
Early termination fee
If you're on a Classic 12 Month contract and you cancel before the 12 months are up, Planet Fitness charges a $99 early termination fee. If you've finished your minimum term and you're on a rolling membership, there's no fee.
Check your contract or ask at the front desk to confirm where you're at. If you're within the last few weeks of your term, it might be worth waiting it out rather than paying $99 to leave early.
The annual fee
Planet Fitness charges an annual fee of $49 on top of your regular membership. It's billed around 8 weeks after you join. If you cancel before the annual fee date, you won't be charged. If you cancel after, you won't get it back.
This catches people off guard because it's not mentioned as prominently as the weekly rate when you sign up.
The annual fee is easy to miss when signing up. It's disclosed in the contract but not always clearly communicated at the front desk. If you joined recently, check whether your annual fee date has passed before cancelling, as it could affect the total you've paid.
Pricing
Planet Fitness Australia clubs are individually owned, so pricing varies by location. As a rough guide:
| Membership | Cost | Billing |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | ~$10.95/week | Fortnightly |
| PF Black Card | ~$10.95/week | Fortnightly |
| Annual fee | $49 | Once per year |
| Early termination fee | $99 | If within 12-month contract |
Check with your specific club for exact pricing. Some locations run promotions with lower weekly rates.
Your membership stays active until the end of your notice period (7 days from when the club receives your cancellation). After that, your access stops and direct debits should cease. Keep your cancellation email or a copy of your letter as proof, and check your bank statement to confirm the charges have stopped.
Cooling-off period
If you signed up within the last 7 days, you may be able to cancel without any fee under Planet Fitness Australia's cooling-off policy. Send your cancellation immediately and reference the cooling-off period.
