Cancel difficulty: Easy

NordVPN doesn't have a cancel button. What they have is an auto-renewal toggle. Turning it off means your subscription won't renew at the end of your current period, but you keep full access until then. If you want your money back, that's a separate process (the 30-day money-back guarantee) and it only works within the first 30 days.

How to turn off auto-renewal

  1. Go to my.nordaccount.com and sign in
  2. Click Billing in the left menu
  3. Find the auto-renewal status and click Cancel
  4. Select Cancel auto-renewal from the menu
  5. Confirm the cancellation

Your auto-renewal status changes to "off" and you'll receive a confirmation email. Your VPN keeps working until the end of your current billing period.

Cancelling on mobile

If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, NordVPN can't cancel it for you. You need to cancel through the platform you subscribed on:

  • iPhone/iPad: Settings > tap your name > Subscriptions > NordVPN > Cancel Subscription
  • Android: Google Play > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions > NordVPN > Cancel subscription

If you signed up on the NordVPN website, use the web method above regardless of which device you use the app on.

30-day money-back guarantee

This is NordVPN's actual refund path, but it only applies to your first purchase and only within 30 days. It doesn't apply to renewals.

To claim it:

  1. Go to support.nordvpn.com and start a live chat
  2. Tell the agent you want to cancel and request a refund
  3. Verify your identity through the link they send
  4. Wait for processing (up to 4 hours for the request, up to 10 business days for the money to arrive)

You'll receive a confirmation email once the refund is processed. After that, your account reverts to a free NordVPN account with no VPN access.

After you cancel

If you turned off auto-renewal, your VPN keeps working until the billing period ends. After that, your account stays active but you lose VPN access, Threat Protection, NordPass, and any cloud storage included in your plan. Your account and settings are preserved if you decide to resubscribe later.

Current pricing (USD, billed to Australians via exchange rate)

NordVPN prices are shown in USD. Australian cards are charged in USD and your bank applies its own exchange rate, typically landing 40-50% higher in AUD.

PlanMonthly1 Year2 Years
Basic (VPN only)$12.99 USD (~$19.50 AUD)$4.99 USD/mo (~$7.50 AUD/mo)$3.39 USD/mo (~$5.10 AUD/mo)
Plus (+ Threat Protection, NordPass)$15.29 USD (~$22.90 AUD)$5.99 USD/mo (~$9 AUD/mo)$4.39 USD/mo (~$6.60 AUD/mo)
Complete (+ 1TB cloud storage)$18.69 USD (~$28 AUD)$6.99 USD/mo (~$10.50 AUD/mo)$5.39 USD/mo (~$8.10 AUD/mo)

The 2-year plan looks cheap, but the total upfront cost for Basic is $81 USD ($122 AUD). And the real sting comes at renewal.

The renewal price trap

Dark pattern warning

NordVPN's 2-year promotional pricing hides a significant renewal increase. When your initial term ends, auto-renewal kicks in at the standard annual rate, not the promotional rate you signed up for. Multiple class action lawsuits filed in 2024 and 2025 allege NordVPN uses dark patterns to lock users into automatically renewing plans without clear consent, buries renewal terms in fine print, and charges users 14 days before their subscription actually expires. The low headline price gets you in. The renewal price, often three times higher per month, is what keeps you paying.

This is why turning off auto-renewal matters even if you plan to keep using NordVPN. You can always resubscribe at whatever promotional rate they're offering new customers, which is almost always cheaper than the renewal rate.

Do you still need a VPN?

For most Australians, a VPN is useful for accessing geo-blocked streaming content and privacy on public Wi-Fi. But if you signed up for a specific purpose (a trip overseas, accessing a US streaming library) and that's done, you probably don't need to keep paying.

If you do want a VPN, consider whether you're on the right plan. The Basic plan covers VPN access. The Plus and Complete tiers bundle extras (password manager, cloud storage) that you might already have through other subscriptions.

NordVPN sorted. But VPNs are just one of the subscriptions that quietly renew in the background.

Most people find 3-5 subscriptions they forgot about when they actually look. Upload a bank statement to Subtracker and see every recurring charge in 2 minutes. No bank login. No manual entry. $12.99 once.
