Cancelling Headspace is straightforward, but the method depends on where you subscribed. If you signed up through the App Store or Google Play (most people do), you have to cancel through your device settings. Headspace's own website can't help you with those.
Where did you subscribe?
This is the single most important thing to figure out before you try to cancel. If you cancel in the wrong place, nothing happens and you keep getting charged.
Check the Headspace app: Open Headspace, go to your profile, then tap Subscription. It will tell you whether your subscription is managed by Apple, Google, or Headspace directly.
Cancel on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings on your device
- Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions
- Find Headspace in the list and tap it
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm
If Headspace doesn't appear in your subscription list, you didn't subscribe through Apple. Check Google Play or the Headspace website instead.
Cancel on Android
- Open the Google Play Store app
- Tap your profile icon, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions
- Find Headspace and tap it
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts
Cancel a direct subscription (headspace.com)
- Log in at headspace.com from a browser (not the app)
- Go to headspace.com/subscription/manage
- Click Cancel Membership
- Confirm
If the Cancel Membership button isn't there, email help@headspace.com and ask them to process it.
You keep access to Headspace until the end of your current billing period. Your meditation stats, streak history, and completed sessions are saved on your account. After cancellation, your account reverts to the free tier, which gives you a limited selection of meditations, some breathing exercises, and a basic sleep experience. All premium content (courses, sleepcasts, focus music, the full library) locks again.
Current pricing
Headspace bills in USD. Here's what that looks like in Australian dollars.
| Plan | Price (USD) | Approx. AUD |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $12.99/mo | ~$21/mo |
| Annual | $69.99/yr | |
| Student (annual) | $12.99/yr | ~$21/yr |
| Family (up to 6) | $99.99/yr | ~$160/yr |
The student plan is genuinely good value at 85% off, available to Australian university students aged 18+ (verified through SheerID). If you're a student who still wants Headspace, switching to the student plan might make more sense than cancelling.
Do you actually need to cancel?
Headspace has a free tier. It's limited, but it includes a handful of guided meditations, a few breathing exercises, and one or two sleep experiences. If you meditate occasionally rather than daily, the free tier might be enough.
If the free tier feels too restrictive, consider these alternatives before resubscribing:
- Smiling Mind: Completely free. Built by an Australian not-for-profit. Over 700 evidence-based meditations for adults, teens, and kids. Programs in several Indigenous Australian languages. No premium tier, no upsells. This is the best free meditation app for Australians.
- Insight Timer: The largest free meditation library in the world (200,000+ guided sessions). Quality varies, but there's a lot of good content. Premium is optional.
- YouTube: Thousands of free guided meditations. No app needed. Search "guided meditation" or "body scan" and you'll find sessions from qualified teachers.
Watch out for
Headspace's cancel flow is clean. No phone calls, no retention agents, no dark patterns in the actual cancellation process. But a few things to know:
- Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription. This catches people constantly. The subscription lives in your App Store or Google Play account, not in the app itself.
- Refunds are difficult. Multiple Reddit users report being charged despite cancelling before renewal, then being denied refunds by Headspace support. If this happens, request a refund directly from Apple or Google Play instead, as they tend to be more reasonable with recent charges.
- Free trial auto-renewal. Headspace offers 7-day (monthly) or 14-day (annual) free trials. These auto-renew at full price. Set a reminder a day before the trial ends if you're not sure you want to keep it.
One meditation app down. What other subscriptions have you been meaning to deal with?
Most people find 3-5 subscriptions they forgot about when they actually look. Upload a bank statement to Subtracker and see every recurring charge in 2 minutes. No bank login. No manual entry. $12.99 once.
