Discord Nitro is one of those subscriptions you sign up for when you're deep into a server and then forget about once the novelty wears off. Animated emojis and bigger uploads are nice-to-haves, but they're rarely essentials. Cancelling is straightforward, though there's one gotcha with server boosts that catches people off guard.
Nitro vs Nitro Basic (quick refresher)
People confuse these two constantly. Here's the difference:
- Nitro Basic ($2.99 USD/mo) gives you custom emoji across servers, 50 MB uploads, and a Nitro badge. No server boosts.
- Nitro ($9.99 USD/mo) gets you everything in Basic plus 500 MB uploads, 2 server boosts, animated avatar and banner, custom profile themes, HD streaming at 4K/60fps, and a 4,000 character message limit.
Both are billed in USD. No AUD pricing exists, so your bank's exchange rate applies each month.
How to cancel (desktop or browser)
- Open Discord and click the gear icon next to your username (bottom left)
- Click Subscriptions in the left sidebar
- Click Cancel on your Nitro or Nitro Basic banner
- Follow the prompts and click Confirm
That's it. Your perks stay active until the end of your current billing period.
Cancel from iPhone
If you bought Nitro through the iOS App Store, you must cancel through Apple:
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap your Apple ID (your name at the top)
- Tap Subscriptions
- Find Discord Nitro and tap Cancel Subscription
You cannot cancel an App Store subscription from the Discord app or website. If you don't see Discord in your Apple subscriptions, you probably bought it through the desktop app instead.
Cancel from Android
If you bought Nitro through Google Play:
- Open the Google Play Store
- Tap your profile icon and go to Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions
- Select Discord Nitro and tap Cancel subscription
Same rule applies: you must cancel on the same platform you purchased from. Desktop purchases can only be cancelled through the desktop app or browser.
Once your billing period ends, you lose: 500 MB uploads (drops back to 25 MB), custom emoji in other servers, animated avatar and banner (reverts to static), custom profile themes, HD streaming, and your 2 included server boosts. Your chat history, servers, and friends list are unaffected. If you gifted Nitro to someone else, their subscription is separate and stays active.
The server boost catch
This is the one that surprises people. If you're on full Nitro, you get 2 server boosts included. When your subscription ends, those boosts are removed from whatever servers you applied them to. If your boosts were helping a server maintain a boost level (say, Level 2 for better audio quality or custom banner), the server could drop a level.
If you bought extra boosts on top of your Nitro ones, those stay active but you lose the 30% Nitro subscriber discount at your next boost renewal.
Promo trial? Cancel before it converts
Discord Nitro trials are often bundled with Xbox Game Pass, Epic Games promotions, and similar deals. These auto-convert to a paid subscription when the trial ends. If you signed up through a promo, set a reminder to cancel before the trial period is up. Discord does not send a heads-up before charging you.
Nitro handled. But between Discord, gaming subs, and streaming services, these things stack up fast.
