Afterpay isn't a subscription in the traditional sense. Most people searching "cancel Afterpay" want one of three things: close their account entirely, cancel a specific order's payment plan, or stop using Afterpay Plus. Here's how to do all three.
Close your Afterpay account
Your account balance must be $0 before Afterpay will let you close it. If you still have outstanding instalments, you'll need to pay them off first (or wait for them to finish).
Via the app
- Open the Afterpay app and tap My Afterpay (bottom right)
- Tap the settings icon (top right), then Profile details
- Tap Close my account
- Select a reason and tap Continue
- Tap Yes, close my account
Via the website
- Log in at afterpay.com
- Select Account from the left menu
- Scroll to the bottom under "Your details" and click Close my account
- Select a reason and click Continue
- Confirm by clicking Yes, close my account
This is permanent. You won't be able to open a new Afterpay account in the future.
Once closed, you lose access to your order history, profile, and spending limit. Afterpay retains some data (login details, transaction records) for legal and regulatory purposes. You cannot reopen a closed account or create a new one.
If you just want to stop using it (without closing)
You don't have to close your account to stop using Afterpay. Two lighter options:
- Deactivate your account. Same steps as closing, but choose "Deactivate" instead. This pauses your account. You can reactivate later and your history stays intact.
- Set a spending cap. In the app, you can set a spend limit to $0 so you can't make new purchases. Useful if you want the account to exist but don't trust yourself to leave it alone.
Cancel a specific order
You can't cancel individual instalments mid-plan. If you've already received the item, the remaining payments are locked in and will be debited on schedule. If you returned the item, the merchant processes the refund through Afterpay and your remaining payments are adjusted or cancelled.
To check the status of a return: open the Afterpay app, find the order, and check whether the refund has been applied. If it hasn't, contact the merchant first.
Cancel Afterpay Plus ($9.99/month)
Afterpay Plus is the only part of Afterpay that has a monthly fee. It costs $9.99/month and gives you a digital card that works anywhere Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay is accepted (not just Afterpay partner stores).
To cancel it:
- Open the Afterpay app and go to My Afterpay
- Tap the settings icon (top right)
- Tap Manage Afterpay Plus Card
- Tap Cancel Afterpay Plus Card
You keep access until the end of your current billing cycle. After that, you're downgraded to the standard Afterpay Card, which only works at participating merchants.
If you're not sure about cancelling, you can pause the subscription for 1, 2, or 3 months from the same menu.
What happens if you just stop paying
Afterpay charges late fees in Australia, capped at 25% of the order value or $68, whichever is lower. For orders under $40, the maximum late fee is $10 (charged once).
If you continue to miss payments, your account gets frozen and the debt can be referred to a collection agency. Since June 2025, BNPL providers are regulated under the National Consumer Credit Protection Act. That means missed Afterpay payments can now appear on your credit report if the debt is more than $150 and overdue by 60+ days.
Don't just ignore outstanding payments. If you're struggling, Afterpay has a hardship page where you can request a payment plan.
